We encourage you to watch these award winning Costa Rica videos, and witness first hand the glory and beauty of Corcovado National Park. Our rivers are the lifeblood of our precious watersheds that are being destroyed one by one. The biodiversity of these watersheds is being rapidly degraded. The Neotropical River Otter, currently on CITIES 1 endangered species list, also tapirs, monkeys, cats, caiman and indigenous fish species spawning and feeding both up and downstream are all feeling the impact of gravel mining from OSA’s rivers. Acquiring these concessions into more responsible hands would be a great beginning toward river protection and restoration. Obtaining the river mining concessions reduces or eliminates the eminent environmental disaster now facing us; it offsets our Osa carbon footprint by plantings along the riparian corridors of the alluvial plain. Another very important point is that there's a paucity, or total lack of riparian corridor studies in Costa Rica done by Costa Ricans that could scientifically establish the biodiversity and cultural importance of such corridors and the need to protect not only the rivers, but the buffer zones alongside them. If such studies were readily available, riparian protection acts could be passed by the Assembly. At the very least, court challenges to prevent river mining concession being granted could be armed with the studies as evidence against such an activity. Therefore, it is imperative that Costa Rica quickly find funding for their own scientists and graduate students to do more river studies specifically on the Osa Peninsula. The University of Costa Rica and National University are the ones that should perform such studies to prevent further river destruction.
It is our hope to see the establishment of protected riparian corridor reserves and reverse destructive river mining and deforestation caused by unsustainable developments. It is the sole purpose of The OSAtv network to bring conservation minded attention and awareness about Costa Rica’s most precious eco system and the people that live in Southern Costa Rica.
Forest fragmentation continues here due to the government’s inability to fairly police its own environmental laws. The reproductive phenology, the rainforest seedling inventory and local natural seed banks, are at risk. As you may know, the Osa’s natural seed bank is critical to reforestation projects. Ideally, re-planting the rainforest and supporting reproductive biology will expand biological corridors. Seeds and seedlings harvested from the forest floor, grown in nurseries, and then transplanted later under the forest canopy will help bridge the biological gaps and corridors all over the Osa, and support agriculture and reforestation.
In theory, after the materials are extracted from open pit mines on private pasture land, the pit(s) could be turned into fresh-water lagoons and be used for such things as fish hatcheries, recreation and lodging, and even create a much needed Osa waste landfill, transfer station and recycling center. There are present legal obstacles to open-pit mining, but non insurmountable.
